So you now have a blog,well good for you! However after you start a blog, you must now be asking yourself.Now what i am going to do next?

You’re so eager to start a blog, thinking of all the  great stuff  you’re going to do when you’re blog is live.You forgot to think about what to do next..But don’t worry i got you covered!

In this post i will discuss the things you need to do immediately after you start a blog.We will be talking about where you will get traffic for your blog.

I will also introduce you to the concept of SEO.We will talk about Google and how to get  “indexed”  by Google.I will also mentions stuff that will add functionality to your site.Sound fun huh?Let dive in shall we?

1.Immediately after you start a blog make it social.Immediately after you start a blog make social media accounts exclusively for your blog

Immediately after you start a blog the next thing to do is to create social channels for it.I highly encourage you to create relevant social media accounts dedicated to your blog alone.

Back when i started my very first blog,i didn’t made any social media profile for it.I was too stubborn to focus all of my efforts to getting ranked in google.I put it off making my site social for the longest time possible.

But then i realized i just started. Nobody knows my site. And there’s no one to link it to build backlinks. How in the world am i going to rank? It really is next to impossible.

So google organic traffic is out of the question. I am also limited by my budget so paid advertising is not an option.

So the next logical choice for my brand new blog is social media.

Things i like about social media:

1.It’s free

Setting up an social media account is free of charge.And the potential for growth is big

2.Easy to set up

It take less than 10 minutes to set up a social media account.

3.It has the potential to build a following.

If you put in the time and effort necessary. You will build a following to drive traffic to your site.

Start wide then taper down

At the beginning ,i suggest that you create as many relavant social media accounts .
Normally people will tell you to pick 2-3 social media platforms. And focus all your attention to only these platforms.

But here’s the thing. When you’re a new blogger. You don’t really have a solid direction to where your blog is going.

All you can really do is make intelligent guesses. And make adjustments along the way.

You can create an audience profile. And have a smart estimate where your target audience is. But still you can’t really tell until you tried it out for yourself.These are still just an approximate not solid data.

It’s trial and error

Now the reason why i am encouraging you to start an account. To all the social media platforms relevant to you. Is to have a “feel” where your target audience is hanging out.

Not until you actually have a traffic to your blog and see for yourself where exactly your traffic is coming from,Then and only then  will you taper down your social media campaign to just 2- 3 of your major social media traffic source

Afterwards when you have spent time promoting your blog using social media. You will have an estimate of the advantages as well as disadvatages of each  networks. From there you can focus your effort. On which social media platform best suits you needs.

A word of advice for newbie bloggers. Don’t use your personal profile when promoting your blog.There should be a separation between work and your personal life. Believe me later down the road you will thank me for this.

2.Optimize your blog for SEOImmediately after you start a blog optimize it for SEO

At the onset of your blog i recommend that you optimize your blog for SEO

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

As of 2019 as of the last count there about 1.94 Billion websites in the world

Just imagine how many blogpost are published every single day?About 4.4 Million every day.

That’s a whopping 120 Million post in a month! And do you know who curate those posts?

Search engines like Google and Bing are the biggest “curator” of blogposts and pages in the world.

They curate each blogposts. And sort how they relate to one another.They then store and arrange this information in their data banks.Ready to be retrieve by a user in a matter of seconds

Sounds amazing huh? Well it is!

Each search engine has it’s own secret formula for ranking a blogpost  in their  search result.Its called search engine algorith.

And the key to higher search engine ranking is Search engine optimization.

And the more Search engine optimized your post is. The better chance it get ranked in Google search rankings.

There actually two aspects of SEO

1.ON PAGE SEO

On Page SEO is the practice of optimizing the HTML source code and content of a blog post or page with the goal of ranking higher and earn relevant search traffic.

1.Content

Content is the heart of On page SEO.It’s the “meat” of your post.Creating “good content” is key to good On Page SEO

Tips on writing good content

1.It has to be original

2.It has to be useful

3.Well researched

4.Unbiased

2.HTML code

The best way to engage audience online is through HTML tags.
HTML Tags are small snippets of coding that tell search engines how to “read” your content
Adding tags to your HTML improves your search engine visibility.

3.Site architechture

Site structure refers to how you organize your content.Your website content will discuss a variety of topics.And these topics will be represented in a form of post and pages.It’s  is all about how you categorize your content. And how they link to one another. A site that has is well structured will benefit both the users and search engines as well. Resulting in higher search ranking.

2.OFF PAGE SEO

Off page SEO is theactivites poeple do away from their website to level up their ranking in search engine.

This activities includes
1.Buidling links

2.Establishing trust

3.Creating social buzz

Immediately after you start a blog make Google your best friend.

You want your blog to be search engine friendly as much as possible.Especially Google .And you want to do this as early as possible

You ask why?

Because GOOGLE is the world’s major search engine.It holds more than 70 percent of the world search traffic.Just imagine the sheer size of that traffic.And building credibility with Google takes time.

I don’t want to overwhelm you with so many technical stuff.

For now just do the following.

1. install the YOAST SEO plugin.

It’s an all in one SEO plug in that takes care of your blog’s SEO needs.It also a great aid in making great content.

2. Do a keyword research.

Depending on your target niche.Create a list of potential keywords that you will use for your content.I suggest you use Google keyword planner.The next is ubersuggest by neil patel its free and powerful tool.

But for those who are not limited by budget try kwfinder.It a powerful keyword research that automatically calculates the keyword difficulty of a certain keyword.Kwfinder will make your keyword research job a lot easier but with a cost.

Secondly,after you start a blog sign up to GOOGLE search console aka Google webmasters tool.It’s an online web service tools that allows web publishers to monitor their website performance in searching ranking .

There are many benefits of signing up to Google search console.I highly encourage you to do this right after you have done the first step.

4.Set up  analytics account Immediately after you start a blog sign up to google analytics

Third thing to do after you start a blog is to set up a Google analytics account.Its an online free web service provided for webmasters like google search console.It allows the webmaster to monitors key performance of your website.One of it’s job is to make records of amount of traffic going in and out of your site.And it tells where your traffic is coming from.Details that are very important for you to monitor

4.Enables you to identify your top performing pages.

5.Tell you when is the best time to post

5.Set your permalink structure immediately after you start a blog

You must be wondering what the heck is a permalink structure?

Permalink structure is the way how you will show your post and pages online.

When you set the permalink structure of your blog. All your posts and pages will be published according to what you chose.

The default option of your wordpress website is the plain structure. It’s ugly ,it’s cryptic and search engine don’t really know what to do with it.That’s why i am telling you to change this right after your blog goes live.

There are options when structuring your permalinks. I do  recommend the “Post Name” structure. Because it allows you to show relevant keywords in your URL’s. It helps with your search engine optimization (SEO). And it is easier to interlink with your other posts.

Be careful with permalinks

A word of caution though .Whatever you choose as a permalink structure. Stick with this through out your blog’s life time.Because if later on you change your mind it will be difficult to fix

You will be breaking the links to each post you have published until the date you made the changes. You will have to set up redirects and that can be very messy if you don’t do it correctly.

I suggest that you pick post name  structure. Click save and never touch this part again.

6.Create a tagline

Tagline is the line below the main header of your website

The purpose of the tagline is to brand yourself. You want to set yourself apart from the rest of the bloggers in your niche.And you need to do this as early as possible.And it also lets people know who you cater to.

7.Write an about me page immediately after you start a blog.

About me page is important very important. It tells people something about you. It informs people what you are about. And tells why you do what you do.Through your about me page you establish a connection with your audience.

With the about me page people will know how you can solve their problems.Take time and effort when writing your about me page.Never underestimate the power of a well written about me page.

8.Set up your home page

After you have start a blog you have to start thinking of the structure of  your home page.Your Home page is the first page people see when they click your link of.It’s you chance to have a good impression to people who pass by your blog.

Take time when your designing your home page.A well designed home page is not only aesthetically pleasing. It also affects your On page SEO.

Your homepage is not just your cover page

This is also where you will get most of your backlinks. So i suggest you spend a great deal of time and effort on designing your homepage. If you can hire someone else to design your homepage for your.

The goal is to maximize your user’s experience. Make your blog as user friendly as you can.

I also suggest that you put most of your pillar content on your home page. So you can get the most of the link juice you will get from people linking to your blog.

9.Set up your blogroll page.

After you have done with the home page.The nest thing to do is create your  blog roll page. Blog roll is the list of your blogpost in reversed chronological order.This display the latest of your posts. It always put the newest post on top of the blogroll.

10.Write a privacy policy immediately after you start a blog.

Another page you need to create immediately after you start a blog is your privacy policy page.

Privacy policy is an important piece of document.

It  discloses how your blog gathers information about it’s users.Stipulating that you will not sell  this information to other third party. And that you will protect any information you will gather from your users.

11.Make you blog GDPR compliant

Immediately after you start a blog,you need to make it GDPR compliant.

GPDR means General Data Protection Regulation.In 2016 the european parliament passed the General Data Protection Regulation.

It gives european citizen control over their personal information. It’s main job is to protect  people’s personal details from abuse. It is necessary that you make your blog GDPR compliant as early as possible.

12.Start writing pillar posts

Just like building a house where you start with the pillars. With blogging it’s the same thing. At the onset of your blog. I advise you to start creating pillar pages or posts. And this will serve as foundation for your succeeding post.

Creating pillar post takes up too much time and effort.The word count of a good pillar post can go as high as 4 thousand words.

Although it’s hard to create pillar post the pay off is also worth it. A well written pillar post tend to generate a lot of traffic. And backlinks to your blog.

13.Start branding yourself.

Right from the start i highly recommend to establish your brand. Your brand what set’s you apart from the pack of millions of bloggers around the world. It’s what people will identify you with

14.Start an email list

Have you heard the saying the money is on the list?. This list refers to the term email list.

Another thing you need to do immediately after you start a blog is start an email list.

An email list is a list of names of  people who gave their email addresses voluntarily. And in the process give you permissions to send them content promotions and special offers.

Step on starting a list

1.Get an email service provider

2.Create an opt-in form

3.Come up with a lead magnet and make it a good

3.Create your email sequence

4.Write your welcome email letter

Why start an email list

  • According to Blogger/entreprenuer Neil Patel a study was made to compare . The result of email marketing,social media marketing,google search traffic and affilaite marketing. It turns out that email marketing is still the best channel for marketing.
  • Traffic generated from email marketing is targeted. And is highly to convert into paying customer.
  • Its cheap setting up an email list. IT is cost effective if you will compare with social media campaign and Google adIts
  • Easy to get started with email marketing
  • Customisable

15.Add functionality to your blog

When you start a brand new blog it only has the very basic functions.You need to download plugins to add new features to your blog.

 What a plugin is?

A Plugin is a piece of software that containes a set of functions that add function to your wordpress website

So where and how do you get them?

1.First step is go to your WordPress dashboard and click plugins

2.Click add new to open the add new plugin

3.Depending on what function you want to add to your website.You can find it at the plug in search box.Enter the keyword of your desired plugin


Some of the plugins i recommend are

1.Yoast SEO plugin

The all in on SEO tool plus writing aid.Very good when you want your post to be as SEO optimized as possible,

2.Aklismet anti spam

It’s a spam filtering plugin that works well plus it’s free

3.Fast velocity minify

Its a plugin that minifies your CSS andJava scripts and creates cached copies of them to increase your page’s loading time

4.Google analytics

Good news now you are able to access your website’s performance within your wordpress dashboard.Just download the GA plugin.Connect your WordPress website to Google analytics and your set!

5.Smush

It’s an image compression plugin that work really well.Images takes up loading time and in the world of fast pace internet every milli second counts.And smush does the job pretty well of compressing images files to reduce page

6.Updtraft plus backup/restore plugin

You may never know when you’re going to break your website’s code.In the even that you do break the code of your website,don’t worry Updraft got your back.Its a back up plugin that saves a back up file of your website.

7.WP GDPR compliance

Like i said before you need to be GDPR compliant as early as possible.You don’t know for sure where yoru traffic is going to come from.and you need to be ready.Many blog’s have been taken down simply because their blgo is not GDPR complaint.Prevention is always better than cure.

Whew quite a lot huh?Don’t worry although you have your job cut out for you.It does not mean you have to do all of these in one sitting.You can do these one at a time or in batches.It really is up to you.What matters is you get these done.

    Thank you SO MUCH for this tips!! I absolutely love your resources for new bloggers (like myself). I’ve had some casual blogs in the past but this is the first time I’m venturing out with my own domain and also hosting myself, etc…
    I’ve found your resources much more practical and easy to understand and apply than many other articles I’ve been coming across.

      thanks for the comment. This post is based on experience. And I made it so as if I am talking to myself 3 years ago. I wish I read this post myself when I was starting out. The frustration and confusion that I have to put up with just to absorb so much information. People make post assuming that the person reading already knows a bit of a background of what they are talking about. But it’s not the case all the time.
